Manual transmissions are useless and dead for a reason. We already have to pay attention to our surroundings and make sure we don’t hit anything (or anyone hits us). Having to shift your transmission into gears besides Park, Reverse, and Drive (and maybe neutral) is a waste of time.

It is a way to try and get Trump, probably in part to slow any momentum he might have going into an election year with a strong economy. Also revenge because they hate him. The Senate will absolutely not convict, being controlled by the GOP, so this is just political theatre that wastes time and money.

Funny thing is, the Dems aren’t learning from recent history. The Rs impeached Clinton, and it didn’t do squat. H e was still virtually carried out of office on a litter when his term ran out.

Trump is as likely to use this impeachment and trial without conviction to his advantage, saying the “swamp” tried to stop him from fighting for the common man, but he beat them, etc. So, there is a strong chance the whole thing will backfire on the D party.

Sincethe Department of Justice has jurisdiction over criminal trials and answers to the president, no trial will happen e xcept for one in the Senate after impeachment. That is supposed to be a limit on presidential power, but the legislative branch is broken so no meaningful action will happen.

Impeachment is a black mark against Trump. Unfortunately, in order for Trump to be removed, two-thirds of the Senate needs to vote for removal. That is not going to happen. It’s clear from their own statements that most Republican Senators, including the majority leader have no intention of doing anything that might hurt Trump. There’s approximately 0% chance of the Senate voting for removal, despite significant evidence of wrongdoing.

That’s definitely not why the Democrats are doing this. Despite a majority of the country supporting impeachment and removal, most House Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been extremely reluctant to pursue impeachment and did so only when Trump’s blatant corruption became so obvious they couldn’t ignore the left wing. The Democratic leadership is terrified that the impeachment vote exposes representatives in swing districts to criticism from Trump supporters they might otherwise be able to court, while as noted above, there is no chance to actually remove Trump because of the situation in the Senate. Even now many Democratic candidates want to talk about anything else other than impeachment. I personally think this is silly and they should be trying to smear the entire Republican party as corrupt for their refusal to deal with a man who happily sold out America’s interests for his own personal political gain, but that’s not the way they are going. The House certainly has been doing other things, but there’s the problem that any Democratic priorities are essentially dead in the water in the Senate and with Trump. There has been deal making lately, on the budget, a separate military spending bill, the new NAFTA deal, and even a somewhat weird Space Force/Federal Employee Family Leave arrangement. I think there are little things still being handled there, but deals are happening (I tend to think the GOP is coming out better in terms of getting their priorities addressed).

While there’s no earthly circumstance under which Trump will be convicted and removed from office, I was initially modestly in favor of impeachment just on principle. If any US president ever deserved impeachment, it’s Trump ( and Bush 43 . And Nixon...)

But the Pelosi gang’s typical bungling of the whole thing is really souring me against it. I suspect many people view the whole process as self-serving and performative. The Democrats explicitly ruled out impeachment for any number of real offenses after they took the House only to reverse course once Trump started targeting one of their own, and now that their asses are in gear the best they can come up with for articles of impeachment concern mostly legalistic technical offenses that will make most people’s eyes glaze over. At the same time, they not only voted to extend the Patriot Act which grants the person they think is unfit for office sweeping executive powers, they also just voted to pass Trump’s budget which defunds Obamacare (!!!!!!) and blows up the deficit by another $300 billion. What the fuck is going through their minds?

Yes, if he is not convicted by the senate then it’s the same as an acquittal in a trial, no sanctions on his record. If he is convicted, then he is immediately removed from office, but he can still run again unless the senate specifically prohibits it as part of its ruling.
